The Howie-Les Report: High Water Mark
2012-10-22: Mighty Pirates 8 at Grrrowl 2

The Mighty Pirates (2-3-1) set a new club record Monday night by scoring seven goals in the first period, previously topping out at six goals in a period. After tallying their seven goals, the team sat back and coasted to an 8-2 win against an undermanned, and thus over-matched, Grrrowl (1-4-1).

With just nine skaters on their bench, the Grrrowl were hard pressed to keep up with the sub-buoyed Pirates who sported a full bench: three forward lines and a six man defense unit thanks to J. Sager, S. Klein, Hine, Rosenberg, and Kitchen.

And, in spite of boasting two goalies, the team still needed the steady services of Chris Duncan between the pipes.

That's six subs in one game and, without checking his facts, this reporter is going to declare that another club record! (Verified by Swashbucks Entertainment Group, Technologies Division!)

The subs contributed three goals and five assists in the winning cause, a record breaking endeavour which rewrites the record book to look like this:

• 7 (1st period, 2012-10-22 at Grrrowl, W 8-2)
• 6 (1st period, 2001-01-18 vs Renegades, W 8-3)
• 5 (2nd period, 2009-09-28 at Scorpions, W 6-2)
• 5 (2nd period, 2011-02-21 vs Steelheads, W 10-3)
• 4 (15 times)

Note: the Pirates have never scored more than four goals in a third period.

Of course, the Pirates have been on the short end of some pretty serious losses and have allowed six goals in a period four times, but never more than six.

In spite of the lopsided first period, the Grrrowl never stopped competing and closed out the game's final goal with only two minutes remaining. Further credit to the losing side, the game was free of penalties because the Grrrowl kept their focus on solving Duncan and thus avoided getting frustrated. Now that is hockey!

Of minor note, Captain Mola had an adventurous game after having his skate sharpening botched prior to taking the warm-up. Mola sent himself heavily into the boards, on two separate occasions, but found enough edge on his blades to tally a goal and two assists. He also appeared to over celebrate the final Pirates tally, mistaking goal scorer Kitchen for "Tower of Power" Turner. (Kitchen also had a goal and two assists). The classy captain apologized to the Grrrowl goalkeeper in the post-game handshake line and apparently explained he's blind as bat on the ice. It makes this reporter wonder how Mola keeps finding the net with that heavy slap-shot. Mola was 1G, 2A on the night... and yes, it was that slap-shot again.

Forward Leggett notched two goals and sounded off in the post-game scrum: "Yeah, well, without Mutch out there to hog all the glory, it turns out some of us can score." Mutch leads the team with 9 points (5G, 4A). Leggett declined further comment when this was pointed out by a fellow reporter, but was heard to mutter something about fancy pants.
