Pirates Now in Stratosphere with Nine Straight Games Without a Loss...
2010-11-29: Mighty Pirates 5 at Toronto Blades 3

Game Sheet

News Deck - The Howie Report Howie — who is busier than you know who — thanks our true and intrepid reporter and webmaster — who himself has been plenty busy wowing the entertainment world with his imitations of the Messiah on stage — for providing the succinct and perspicacious summary of last Monday's game.

  • While the Mighty Pirates held the lead for nearly the entire game, the Toronto Blades never let up or gave in. Even falling down 5-2 early in the third, they continued to press. If the Pirates had not played perfect, penalty-free hockey, this game could have easily gone the other way.
  • 1st goal: I didn't see it specifically, but I know Mola got off a solid shot from the slot. The rebound found its way to Mutch. While he was thwarted on his first attempt, he managed to chip it in on his second for a 1-0 Pirates' lead 101 seconds in. The moral is: never give up on a puck!
  • 2nd goal: I can't fully remember, but there was some great passing going on. I think Mutch had a partial break?
  • 3rd goal: Nine seconds after Mutch scores, Gallivan pushes the puck forward off a draw, then intercepts a D to D pass at the blue line to walk in and fire it top right corner. 3-1 Pirates.
  • 4th goal: A gorgeous, long-bomb pass from Hine right landing right on the tape of a breaking Mola. Like a wizard, the Captain entranced the goalie, finally slipping it five-hole. Smooooooooooth! 4-2 Pirates.
  • 5th goal: Gallivan tried a wrap-around, but the goalie was in fine position. The 'keep then made a remarkable save off of Phillips' rebound; but, while that puck nearly trickled into the net, Mandell was there to smartly flip the puck over a sprawling defenseman who was trying to guard the now empty cage. 5-2 Pirates.
  • Big blocker save from Sturgeon with just a few minutes to play. Sturgeon was tested a fair amount in this game, but stood tall coming back from his injury.
  • All three Blade goals came on counter attacks, as they tried to jump on any Pirate mistakes. The Blades have plenty of speed up front, so the Pirates wingers need to be covering if any of our defenseman go on the rush. I believe two of the three goals against were odd man rushes.
  • Bingham and Brown are official no shows, now officially off the roster. :(
  • Penalty-free game, 2nd in a row.
  • Four wins in a row, undefeated in nine.
  • Mutch scored career goals 149 and 150, the first Pirate in history to do so. Not known if he has shaved off his moustache! He only needs three more assists for 100, and 3 more points for 250 career.
  • Mandell scored his second goal in as many games since returning to action!
Thanks, Jonathan Gallivan!
