2016-02-08: Mighty Pirates 2 vs. Exposed 0

Game Sheet

News Deck - The Howie Report Building on a four-game winning streak, the Pirates (10-7-2) have taken control of their destiny for a division title, and a trip to the TNHC Super Series Tournament of Champions in April.

Now in sole possession of first place by a single point over Heisenberg (8-6-5), the Bucs simply need three straight wins to finish the regular season, and they will capture both honours. Easy peasy, right?

Coming into the rink against the competent and skilled Exposed (9-10-0), the division's second highest scoring team, the Pirates knew it was going to be their defensive game that would deliver them to glory. And boy... did it ever! What no one in the building knew last night is that we'd be seeing the return of Pirate Brand Hockey®! We're talking "full team effort". Smart hockey with little panic and few mistakes. Leggett stated in a post-game scrum, "That was the best hockey game I've seen us play in years."

Sure, fans weren't that excited about a 0-0 tie heading into the third period. However, when J. Sager banged away in the slot, somehow digging in for his fourth game-winning goal of the season, with just over nine minutes to play, there wasn't a single person sitting down in the stands! Well, there are no stands in Rinx 3... and we don't recall any people watching at all... but, if there were stands and people there... it would have been absolute pandemonium! There certainly wasn't a single Pirate sitting on the bench at the time.

That's the thing. Nothing was easy on this night. Nothing was handed to the Pirates on a silver platter.

Your heroes killed off four penalties on the night, including a 3-on-5 in the final two minutes of the game. Leggett would end any hopes of an Exposed comeback with his sixth career empty-netter, equalling the team record held by Captain Mola himself.
