The "Howie-Les" Report
2015-10-07: Mighty Pirates 1 at Brewstars 1

Game Sheet

News Deck - The Howie Report The Pirates (1-0-2) had some injury woes on this evening, to be sure... but, when you looked over at the Brewstars (0-1-2) bench and saw just two subs, you had to think this one was a lock for your heroes!

The Bucs did seem to be skating well to start the game, and after a great breakout and pass from R. Kwinter, Gallivan went between a defenders legs and far post to give the Pirates an early 1-0 at Maple Leaf Gardens. Surely it was a definitive lock now, right?

Well, when you've been following the Mighty Pirates as long as we have, you simply know... there is no such thing as a Pirate lock.

Granted, the chances did keep coming, but as Leggett surmised at the post-game interviews, "When we start getting lots of chances, we start playing individually, we start taking long shifts, and we start getting outplayed."

While Brewstars 'keep Ip was making save after save, as the game moved into the second half, Sturgeon started to face more shots as well, making some beautiful saves.

Nonetheless, needless "fancy passing" got the Pirates in trouble in the offensive zone, and Sturgeon was without a chance on a speedy two-on-one counter attack with 5:18 on the clock. The Brewstars would equalize 1-1, and that would be it for scoring on the evening.

Not the Pirates' finest hour, and you could feel the tension in the dressing room after the game. You know, a tie that feels like a loss? Well, regardless of that fact, the boys in carbon and goldenrod remain one of two undefeated teams and in the top-half of the standings with a game in hand on most teams. With two games left in the pre-season, it's not a bad place to be!
