Round-By-Round Playoff Coverage

Last Updated: Thursday, April 9th, 2009 at 3:37pm

The Mighty Pirates are two-time winners of the esteemed Starbucks Cup (as the Molson Cup in 1998/1999 and 1999/2000).

A look back at recent playoff runs:

  • 2018/19: This year's challenge is upon us!
  • 2017/18: Unable to solve Grrrowl in the Semi-Finals.
  • 2016/17: CHAMPIONS: Cup awarded to the Pirates after a nine-round shootout!
  • 2015/16: Shocking Semi-Final defeat to Dirty Pucks sends Pirates packing!
  • 2014/15: Swept out with just a single goal in two defeats.
  • 2013/14: A heart breaking loss to Nemesis IV in a two-game Final.
  • 2012/13: CHAMPIONS: We Are The Champions!
  • 2011/12: Back-to-back shootout losses ends the Pirates' season.
  • 2010/11: A devastating loss with 14 seconds left in the OT Final!
  • 2009/10: Outscored 1-11 in two games, another swift exit.
  • 2008/09: Outscored 4-14 in two games, a swift exit.
  • 2007/08: The devastating collapse against the Aeros in the Finals.
  • 2006/07: A close Semi-Final loss to the Original Chiefs ends the dream.
  • 2005/06: After a grueling shootout, the Bucs are shutout... and swept out.
  • 2004/05: A heart-breaking loss to the Loch Monsters in the Final.
  • 2003/04: Outscored 1-9, the Pirates are easily swept from the playoffs.

  • RECAP: The Finals: It's the #1 seed against #2, and you couldn't have asked for a better match-up for the Starbucks Cup®. The Aeros had an edge in the goal-scoring department, but the Suicide Wings had allowed fewer goals. Regardless, the Wings, who went undefeated throughout the playoffs, were simply too much for the defending champions.

  • RECAP: Semi-Final A: Toronto Red Army H.C. had only played the Suicide Wings once before this year — a regular season loss — and they couldn't find a way to beat them in their only playoff meeting either. The Wings will be headed to the Finals as the favourites to win it all.

  • RECAP: Semi-Final B: It was a valiant effort from the Silver Blades, but the Aeros had a little more on the attack to push on through to the Finals. Their high-flying offense, tops in the Monday Day Division, should present a real challenge for the Wings.

  • RECAP: Group A, Game 1: The Mighty Pirates limped into the playoffs on a seven-game losing streak and team confidence at an all-time low ... the huge injury list did not help the cause. The Silver Blades entered on a two-game losing streak, but they played a perfectly-positioned game that left the depleted Pirates with minimal opportunities. Two shorthanded goals (one of them a 5-on-3) simply proved the Blades wanted this game more. The Bucs took half as many penalties, however, leaving them somewhat hopeful for their match-up with the title-winning Suicide Wings.

  • RECAP: Group B, Game 1: The Day Division penalty kings faced off to open Group B, but everyone knows PIMs kill in the playoffs. The teams split their season series, and this was a hard game to call ... obviously, overtime wasn't enough! In a thrilling shootout, the goalies stopped the first three shots for each team, but Toronto Red Army H.C. would eventually edge out their opponents for a big win. The Hogtown Chiefs have to forget the overtime puck that spun ever so slowly, hit the crossbar and bounced off the top of the net. Indeed, Group B is still wide open!

  • RECAP: Group A, Game 2: The Suicide Wings captured a birth in the Semi-Finals with a simple win, but not before the Mighty Pirates gave them a serious run for the money. An early 2-0 lead for your heroes was built during an immaculate first period of hockey, and it held until the dying moments of the second. But, in a mirror of the Pirates' season, the team collapsed in the third, allowing six unanswered goals.

  • RECAP: Group B, Game 2: Elated from a thrilling 6-5 shootout win over the Chiefs in Game 1, Toronto Red Army H.C. continued to play hard hockey, but couldn't find the win that would put them through to the Semi-Finals. Even with the win, the Aeros, Starbucks Cup® champions in the Monday Day Division from a year ago, still had some work to do in Game 3 ... see Game 3 to see if they got it done!

  • RECAP: Group A, Game 3: The Wings and Blades both hammered the handsome Mighty Pirates, leaving the remaining Monday Day Division teams with little hope for extensive playoff coverage for the remainder of the playoffs (nice job boys)! Regardless, other than a fine-tuning session before the Semi-Finals, this game didn't mean much beyond the Wings gaining more dominance in the season series.

  • RECAP: Group B, Game 3: Another hard-fought battle for the Hogtown Chiefs goes for naught, as the Hanson Brothers (and Sisters) are tossed from the Monday Day Division Playoffs. The Aeros and Toronto Red Army H.C. will move on to the Semi-Finals against the Silver Blades and Suicide Wings ... we just need the result of Group A, Game 3 to find out who plays who! All three games from Group B were decided by a single goal ... what a Round!
