Round-By-Round Playoff Coverage

Last Updated: Tuesday, April 8th, 2014 at 6:34am (EST)

The Mighty Pirates are three-time winners of the esteemed True North Cup (as the Molson Cup in 1998/1999 and 1999/2000) after bringing The Cup back home in 2012/13! They couldn't defend their silverware in 2014, but it was a heck of a ride! VIVEN LOS PIRATAS!

  • The Finals: Pirates 7 at Nemesis IV 6 (OT) / Pirates 1 at Nemesis IV 4
  • Round Three: Styx II 1 at Pirates 4
  • Round Two: Pirates 3 at Nemesis IV 5 / Styx II 4 at Haymakers 3
  • Round One: Styx II 0 at Nemesis IV 6 / Pirates 4 at Haymakers 1

  • Game 6 Recap: Trailing 3-6 with three Bucs in the penalty box, the Pirates (3-1) scored three straight in the final four and a half minutes and won it in overtime on a record-breaking six-point night from playoff hero Mutch. Nemesis IV (2-1), who were undefeated, will get another chance for Cup glory in Game 7.

  • Game 7 Recap: With three ineligible players, eight more celebrating Passover, and one who flew south, the Pirates (3-2) had the impossible task of defending their Cup with less than half of their regular roster. Nemesis IV (3-1) were able to completely switch up their game plan after allowing seven goals in the previous game. Their stifling centre ice play left your heroes with little room, while Nemesis IV took advantage of every scoring chance.

Monday GilmourMonday Gilmour 'A' Division - Round Three
  • Game 5 Recap: The Pirates (2-1) were focused on the top line of Styx II, a line that accounted for 85% of the team's total points during the regular season... but, Styx II's second line were as much of a threat throughout. Luckily, after falling behind 0-1 on an early 3-on-5 penalty kill, the Pirates got back to their game plan and churned out some hard fought goals en route to a satisfying 4-1 victory. They will now move on to the Finals against Nemesis IV (2-0) to defend their True North Cup. Styx II are like Tiger Williams would say... "Done like dinner"!

Monday GilmourMonday Gilmour 'A' Division - Round Two
  • Game 3 Recap: The teams had split the regular season series, with each team blowing a third period lead in their loss. We said, right here, that whoever builds a lead will need to work hard to keep it! I guess the Pirates didn't get that message? Facing Nemesis IV (2-0), likely the most well-rounded team in the division, the Pirates (1-1) had a third period breakdown with plenty of heartbreaking giveaways. A 3-1 lead ended in a 3-5 loss, and Nemesis IV have booked their trip to the Finals! The Pirates will now need to get a Round Three win against Styx II (1-1) to claim their spot. Talk about taking the long road!

  • Game 4 Recap: Styx II (1-1) put a disastrous Round One 0-6 loss behind them quickly, but were still in tough against the hard-working Haymakers (0-2), who gave it their all through these playoffs. This one was too close to call, and indeed it ended a one-goal game with Styx II earning the chance to get the the Finals. Of course, they'll have to face the Pirates (1-1) in Round Three first to make good on that chance. The Haymakers, I suppose, are heading to their farms to get on that haymaking?

Monday GilmourMonday Gilmour 'A' Pool - Round One
  • Game 1 Recap: The top seeded and top defensive team in the division, Nemesis IV (1-0), not only shut-down the "top line" of Styx II (0-1), they frustrated them into eight minutes of late penalties and a game ejection. Their offense, which executes plays like no other team in the division, delivered as well with four power-play goals and 11 of 14 getting on the scoresheet, cementing their position as the odds on favourite to win the 2014 True North Cup. They will now prepare to meet the Pirates (1-0), while Styx II will face the Haymakers (0-1) in a "do or die" match in Round Two.

  • Game 2 Recap: The defending champion Pirates (1-0) knew they would need a solid, 32-minute effort facing a confident Haymakers (0-1) club... and they got it. They were able to, for the most part, shut down the offensive force of the Haymakers' #3 Napper, keeping him at bay and forcing all Haymakers to the outside. The Pirates rolled quick lines and worked hard every shift for a much deserved playoff opening win. They Haymakers played it hard, but were ultimately not rewarded for their efforts. The Pirates met Nemesis IV (1-0) in Round Two, while the Haymakers faced Styx II (0-1) in an elimination match.
