Round-By-Round Playoff Coverage

Last Updated: Tuesday, April 18th, 2017 at 1:46am

The Mighty Pirates are now four-time winners of the esteemed True North Cup, as the Molson Cup in 1998/1999 and 1999/2000, and in 2012/13 and 2016/17. Looking forward to seeing it back on D. Turner's dock! Or Sturgeon's... or Mandell's!

  • RECAP: The Final: The top-seeded Cyclones (2-0-2) had controlled the Gilmour Division for months, with winning records against every team in the division... except the Mighty Pirates (4-0-0)! And, it was fitting that the two hottest teams were here to challenge for the 2017 True North Cup. Make no mistake about it, this was playoff drama at its finest. Glorious chances, dramatic steals, highlight reel saves, relentless back-checking... neither of these teams was leaving the rink without The Cup. And, it almost turned out that way, as they battled through an epic, nine-round shootout before the Pirates were declared Champions.

  • RECAP: Semi-Final A1 vs. B2: It's not often the #1 and #2 seeds have to face-off in a do-or-die Semi-Final, but that was the situation here. The Cyclones (2-0-1) had a slight edge on the season series, but they had been blown out by Highest Puck (1-1-1) earlier this season. We were expecting a high-flying, end-to-end game, which it was... but, we were not expected a low-scoring affair. In fact, the Cyclones couldn't breathe freely until they scored an empty-net goal in the final minute to secure the win 2-0.

  • RECAP: Semi-Final A2 vs. B1: the Pirates (3-0-0) had the only perfect record of the playoffs through the round robin; but, they had yet to beat the Dirty Pucks (1-2-0) all season long! The Dirty Ones also shocked the nation by defeating the heavily favoured Pirates in last season's A2 vs. B1 Semi-Final, which was also unnerving. The Pirates also had to make due with a short bench, since it was Passover! However, a most excellent game of positional Pirate hockey gave your heroes a 4-0 lead through two period... and they were able to hang on against the "never giving up" Dirty Pucks to move on to the Final.

  • RECAP: Pool A, Game 1: The Dirty Pucks (1-0) had only scored once in four regular season games against the Aeros (0-1), but they exploded for five goals in their opening playoff game. Perhaps they are looking beyond their spoiler role from a year ago, and actually think they can win The Cup? The Aeros' #71 Pal, who was on a scoring tear to finish the regular season, was unable to carry them on his back in this one, and now they face a "must win" in Game A:2 in which they need to stay out of the penalty box. They've faced playoff adversity before in their storied history... but, a win against the division-title winning Cyclones (0-0) is going to be a very tall order.

  • RECAP: Pool B, Game 1: usually a game against the sixth place team in the opening round-robin is a walk in the park. Not this time! Exposed (0-1) and the Pirates (1-0) had put forth explosive goal scoring bonanzas against each other all season long, averaging eight goals per game between them... and this opening playoff game was no exception! Exposed certainly notched up their game, and held two leads, including a 2-3 lead until the final three and a half minutes. But, the Pirates would erupt again for three goals to take the all important first win. Exposed will face Highest Puck in Game B:2 in a must win situation. Another loss for Exposed guarantees the Pirates are through to the Semi-Final!

  • RECAP: Group A, Game 2: The Dirty Pucks were blown away by the Cyclones in their two early games of the season; but, they did muster a tie and battled hard in a closely fought 2-3 loss to close out the regular season. However, the playoffs are a new season... and another blowout was on the table. No match for the division leading scorer Nyhof (#74) and crew, the Dirty Pucks' fate is now out of their hands. They'll certainly be cheering for the Cyclones in Group A, Game 3! The Cyclones just need a win of any variety, or an overtime loss, to move to the Semi-Final. Heck, they can even lose tonight and still get through if they take two or fewer minor penalties.

  • RECAP: Group B, Game 2: These were two of the most well-balanced, play-making teams in the division. Four of their five previous games versus one another this season were decided by a single goal. However, Highest Puck were able to pick up the sheer intensity, using their ability to quickly turn any play around. Exposed's second worst goals against average didn't help them here, especially with Highest Puck having two of the division's top six playmakers. That's the end of the road for Exposed. Highest Puck have already clinched a Semi-Final spot with this win.

  • RECAP: Group A, Game 3: the Aeros had been unable to find a way to beat the Cyclones in five matches this regular season... but, a thrilling overtime win in the playoffs was overshadowed by five four minor penalties, leaving them packing the bags because of the PIM tie-breaker. What a shame! Goal scoring titans Nyhof (#74) of the Cyclones and Pal (#71) of the Aeros went head-to-head delivering on what was billed as one of the most thrilling games of the opening round... though only one of 10 shootout participants could find the back of the net! The Cyclones advance to the Semi-Finals as the Pool "A" top seed and will face Highest Puck (1-0-1). The Aeros are done!

  • RECAP: Group B, Game 3: Both teams had already advanced to the Semi-Finals, but this was not a "meaningless" game, by any means. These are competitive teams! The Pirates had the edge in the season series, but they were fully aware they came into this game as the underdogs. Not a perfectly executed game by your heroes, but they once again got it done. Highest Puck were hard on the puck and scored a late goal to send this one into overtime. Thankfully, the Pirates buckled down and found a way to win without having to go to a shootout. Highest Puck will take on the #1 seeded Cyclones in the Semi-Finals, while the Pirates will face the Dirty Pucks in a replay of last year's horrifying A2 vs. B1 match-up!
